Tainted wells is a battle spell of Umbra for armies that fight up close. Before the fighting, it poisons every weapon the caster's close fighters carry, and every fang and sting among their venomous kind. For the length of the battle those companies strike with poison, and they strike harder: first blows, follow-up blows and the blows they return.
The spell does a second thing, and many commanders value it more. For the whole battle, no enemy company can heal. Umbra cultivators say the rot comes up from the threshold of the Deep, where the dead wait with nothing to mend them, and a wound touched by it forgets how to close. The histories only record that it works.
It has been cast since the Age of the First Sealborn. Cast from its own affinity it poisons the blades most; against the grain less, and a deeper realm poisons them more.
